PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

I chose this piece to share because it was the first time I evaluated and created a course syllabus. In the past, I had worked a lot with lesson plans and student learning outcomes. In the 90’s when I was teaching for the Navy, we called them lesson training guides and learning objectives.

Curriculum development became a passion for me; it was the next best thing to being on the podium! I absolutely loved it and here was one place where my obsessive compulsive disorder was a perk! I really enjoyed all of the stages; from the beginning where you are researching to make sure that you have the most up to date information available, to the final stage where you personalize your lesson plan and really make it your own. I believe that the creation of the syllabus is one of the final steps of the curriculum process when teaching a course.
Throughout this course, writing SLO’s, creating lesson plans, critiquing syllabi and ultimately the presentation of our material, my decision to pursue a second career in education was validated.
